How to Teach a Child Proper Hygiene

Step
  1. 1

Lead by example. A child learns by watching. Wash your hands after using the restroom, before preparing meals, and after taking out the garbage. Instill in your child the importance of showering, brushing their teeth, and keeping clean.

  2. Step2

Make sure your child is comfortable asking you questions about their body and yours. Be direct in your answers. The more comfortable you are about your body, the more comfortable they will be about discussing the importance of cleaning their body.

Step
  1. 3

Teach your child to wash their hands thoroughly with warm soapy water. Some parents use the alphabet technique. This technique is to have your child sing their ABC's while washing their hands.

  2. Step4

Create a nightly ritual for cleaning themselves. When children are younger, it isn't necessary to shower or bathe every night, however teach them basics like washing their face and hands, and brushing their teeth. As soon as your child is old enough to get dirty, bathing should become a daily ritual.

  3. Step5

Show your child the proper way to wipe after using the restroom. Most parents are embarrassed to show their child how to wipe properly. It is very important for young girls, who are susceptible to bladder infections to learn to wipe from front to back. For both girls and boys, make sure they are wiping thoroughly after a bowel movement. A good idea is to buy moist disposable wipes for your child to use to ensure they are clean in their genital region.

  4. Step6

Illustrate how your child should brush their teeth. Have their dentist use a model of teeth and let them use a toothbrush to use small circular movements. Purchase an electronic toothbrush that beeps every thirty seconds so your child knows to move to another section of their mouth. Teach them to brush at least morning and night.

  5. Step7

Discuss puberty with your child. As puberty hits, your child will begin sweating more, growing hair under their arms and near their genitals, and will have to clean more thoroughly. Purchase deodorant for your son or daughter and reiterate the importance of proper hygiene. As your daughter starts menstruating, teach her how to use tampons or pads, and keep her genitals clean.

  6. Step8

Explain to your son or daughter how important it is to use clean clothing. As a general rule, have them put their socks and underwear in the laundry every night. Dirty socks can lead to athletes foot, and soiled underwear can make girls, especially, more susceptible to bladder infections.
